Firetail goes for a subtle style with the subdued “Nylon”. By opting for such a delicate touch, the pieces resonate much more strongly. Over the course of the journey everything feels so soothing and so familiar. Every piece builds off the last, resulting in an unspoken narrative. By taking on a hushed awe, the pieces have a meditative quality to them. Volume works wonders in revealing the many charms, the gorgeous twists and turns that Firetail embarks upon. Gentle to its very core, Firetail’s restraint results in an interesting intersection of shoegaze meets drone, post-rock meets classical. Multifaceted, Firetail presents a soothing sort of realm one that feels vibrant. <br /><br />Pastoral imagery flashes across the tactile work of “June Bugs” which opens the collection up with an understated gracefulness. Coming into bloom with such care the entirety of the piece works wonders, delving into a mysticism of sorts. On “Own Temple” the song burrows into the psyche, as various guitar feedback gathers greater levels of intensity. Usage of layers further ensures that the evolution of the track becomes outright impossible to fully pin down. By far the highlight of the collection comes at its conclusion, the intricate ornate “Rose Keeper”. Aptly named, the song possesses a tremendous amount of color. Embracing a hypnotic sort of looping everything simply revolves around the deeply felt heart of the piece, the tender tones. <br /><br />With “Nylon” Firetail effortlessly merges ambient, rock, and drone into a satisfying reassuring whole.</div>

After a three year wait, Italian artist/producer Firetail, aka Andrea Vascellari, has returned, with a new EP, Nylon. The three tracks are an original take on ambient music, having been performed entirely in one take and utilizing only a classical guitar. Eschewing the normal banks of synths, Vascellari creates a mesmerizing soundscape of varied sonic vibes. Lush and pleasing, he takes the classical guitar into otherworldly textures and soothing melodic structures, that at times suggest violin and cello. An altogether imaginative and welcome experience. Firetail is the endeavor of Andrea Vascellari, who recorded this 14-minute EP in one take earlier this month. Aptly titled, Nylon features just classical guitar, albeit heavily processed. The result is a set of three short drones. The source material for each can be discerned with careful listening – vibrating, rattling, and scraping of strings. But from there Vascellari uses delays to overlap tones into rolling waves of sound that ebb and flow. While minimalist in nature, Nylon encompasses both pastoral and mildly harsh moments. Vascellari is at his best when unleashes rapidly morphing walls of noise that demand the listener’s attention. Still, Nylon can be enjoyed on many levels, and the detail therein will reward those who are looking for immersive or observational musical experiences.</div>

After a 3 years hiatus, I revived my ambient-alterego Firetail recording a brief EP called <i>Nylon.</i><br />
Every song has been played using just a classical guitar, and recorded directly in one single take.<br />
Minimal as Stars Of The Lid, droney as Labradford, spacey as Flying Saucer Attack.<br />

With each gentle ring of the guitar Firetail’s “So Far” ascends to the heavens. Nothing on “So Far” moves quickly. Adhering to a slowcore/drone aesthetic the songs gain their impact through sheer power. The expertly arranged songs are canvases painting austere landscapes. Restrained to its very core by using a select amount of textures Firetail uses the minimal approach to maximal effect. For these are songs that are quietly emotional with their impact exploring elements of decay, with every gesture slowing dying away to reveal a deep autumnal beauty. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Somber in tone is the glacial pacing of “End=Beginning”. Reminiscent of Stars of the Lid’s early rock-orientated work the song shines with regal beauty. “Floating Around” hovers about with great physical power. Oddly mournful is the saddened hues of “Calculator” with a careful sound that seems to be exploring empty bleak terrain. Nearly silent is the very quiet restrained work of “Ajax”. Merging elements of the world and of Firetail’s epic drone is the lively work of “Narcolepsy”. By far the highlight of the album is the tender work of “The Forest Album By Alan Sparhawk” whose down to earth twang does wonders. Closing things off on a tremendous note is the playfully titled baroque work of “Little Droner Boy”. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On “So Far” Firetail takes his time and it is well worth the wait. Vibrating with life and passion, these are pieces that wrap themselves around the listener giving them an entirely new world to explore.</div>

Game of drones.</div>

Lullabierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08274143947617975182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-356910781141849526.post-28697148429211700412015-06-04T06:34:00.000-07:002015-06-04T06:34:06.088-07:00"So Far" on BandJack<div style="text-align: justify;">
Essentially the one-man-band project of Italian musician Andrea Vascellari, Firetail clearly follows a “less is more” theory of composition. A fine showcase for Vascellari’s production abilities, the group’s music is very minimalistic in nature and generally fits in well with what I might expect from the ambient music genre. 2015 compilation So Far assembles everything that Vascellari has done under the Firetail moniker (he also performs under the name of Lullabier), much of which has a noticeable post-rock quality since it plays similarly to what one hears in the background of tracks from groups like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This album won’t appeal to mainstream tastes, but it’s very solid for what it is – a fact that probably shouldn’t have shocked me since it was Firetail who produced one of 2014’s better Christmas-themed Silber Records albums.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The by-and-large soothing So Far compilation begins with “End=Beginning,” a piece built around a pulse of yearning melody played on a twangy guitar. The pleasantly lazy strumming gurgles out of and fades away into a humming background, occasionally interrupted by a heavily echoed horn. Aptly-titled and airy followup “Floating Around” is propelled by a swirling undercurrent that almost suggests drifting along on a slowly ebbing and flowing sea. Despite again having an aching feel to its melodic elements, this second piece is very peaceful and serene before it gives way to the noticeably louder and comparably more substantial “Calculator.” To me, this third track sounds less obviously earthy than the opening pair and is perhaps more in line with the nearly mystical ambient sections found in so-called “epic rock.” Bellowing out over groaning lower tones, the melody here actually builds to something at certain times instead of just sounding nice, making this piece feel more purposeful than what was heard previously on the album.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Slightly more solemn with brief bits of guitar thrown in to add subtle accents to the droning main melody, the lackadaisical “Ajax” is agreeable enough as relaxing background tone even if nothing much happens during its ten minute running time. Meanwhile, “Narcolepsy” is the only track on the compilation that was previously unreleased and (perhaps unsurprisingly, given the title) the only one that’s genuinely unsettling to listen to. Abruptly stopping and starting throughout, the piece contains a unnerving mixture of found sound (car alarms, distant children playing, cawing birds) and shrill, grinding and whirring industrial-like noise, effectively capturing the semi-conscious state that would exist in people with the titular medical condition. Despite unleashing a sense of quiet despair, it finishes with an almost hopeful conclusion which ensures it fits in context with the rest of the album. Penultimate number “The Forest Album by Alan Sparhawk,” with its layers of echoed, gentle guitar, is more clearly musical than most everything else here and the album concludes with the experimental sound art of “<a href="http://bandjack.com/firetail-little_droner_boy/">Little Droner Boy</a>.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As might be obvious, Firetail’s work possesses minimal value for those who thrive on the active listening experiences that popular music provides. Even to those more familiar with minimalist composition and experimental sounds, So Far might be a love it or hate it affair. Few of the tracks here seem to really go anywhere; they more seek to create a specific atmosphere for the listener to soak up and bask in, eventually ending without much fanfare. Perhaps the best thing I could say about this work then is that it’s quite somnolent, and although that might sound condescending, it’s actually meant as a compliment. The precise way in which this completely inoffensive and frequently meditative material is constructed makes the whole of the album very dreamlike and surreal, even if I don’t think I could quite put it on the same level as something like Popul Vuh. Regardless, I found myself enjoying So Far and I suspect open-minded listeners would, at the very least, not mind listening to it.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
L’ora di durata della raccolta spazia così dai tiepidi vapori dei due primi Ep ( “<a href="http://musicwontsaveyou.com/2013/06/09/firetail-learning-to-cheat/">Learning To Cheat</a>”, e “<a href="http://musicwontsaveyou.com/2014/03/07/firetail-learning-to-waltz/">Learning To Waltz</a>”, ai quali si rimanda per esteso) alle spettrali risonanze di “Little Droner Boy”, che insieme all’inedito “Narcolepsy” e a “The Forest Album By Alan Sparhawk” disegnano soundscape di pronunciata densità, che lasciano intravedere come Vascellari stia indirizzando la propria esplorazione ambient-drone verso una consistenza sempre più astratta, che tuttavia non abbandona l’immaginifica dimensione descrittiva creata al suo modo di trattare le timbriche chitarristiche.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://musicwontsaveyou.com/2015/05/16/firetail-so-far/">http://musicwontsaveyou.com/2015/05/16/firetail-so-far/</a></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

While the previous two albums in the series (Small Life Form’s Parts for Holiday Projects and Electric Bird Noise’s Birth) would be more or less unlistenable to those raised on more mainstream types of music, Firetail’s Droner Boy (the product of musician Andrea Vascellari, better known for work done under the Lullabier name) doesn’t just have a recognizable theme as its basis, but is -gasp!- actually fairly musical.<br /><br />Essentially what we have here is a manipulated version of the song “The Little Drummer Boy” that, instead of revolving around a rhythmic percussion parts, centers around an omnipresent, throbbing drone that’s heard throughout the piece in the background. The early minutes of “Little Droner Boy” include snippets of angelic choir singing the main melody as well as the accented lower vocal parts originally intended to simulate the sounds of drum rolls. While none of the words of the song can be heard in Firetail’s version, it is reassuring to at least find some familiar elements to latch onto here (even if the higher voices sound like drawn-out, resonant shrieks), and the basic framework of the original song is present in some form throughout most of the track.<br /><br />The middle section of “Droner Boy” finds the piece moving as far away from the source material as it ever does, with tinkling chimes, groaning low voice parts, and occasional cadences of military snare drum being heard alongside what sounds like Darth Vader respiration. Ominous though the piece may be at this point, it also has an almost profound, religious sort of feel to it since all the high voice parts have been blended together to create a sort of godly haze which hangs over everything else going on. As it nears its conclusion, things begin to “normalize,” sounding more and more similar to the original tune before a gradual fadeout of almost hopeful reverberating chords. Lacking a big climactic moment of revelation, Little Droner Boy is also probably too drawn out to strike the fancy of those raised on a steady stream of more traditional holiday music. Still, Firetail’s addition to the Silber Christmas release series is entirely listenable and one of the few and perhaps the only volume of the 2014 releases that would have any (albeit limited) appeal to the general listening public. As much as some of the others in this series would be mighty sketchy for most listeners, Little Droner Boy is one that I’d be most inclined to recommend.<div>

Our beloved Silber Records has just released a new Firetail EP called <i>Little Droner Boy</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Actually, it's just one long track, made without guitars. Free to stream, one buck to download.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Brian John Mithell says: "<i>we’re super pleased to have Firetail returning to Silber for their Christmas EP. Only one track, it’s a droning reverb soaked slab of ambient re-working “The Little Drummer Boy” called Little Droner Boy. Mesmerizing, soothing, & angst laden at the same time, is it a Christmas dream or a Christmas nightmare? Maybe a Christmas Dali film...</i>".</div>

Drone has rarely sounded so soulful. Allowing the textures to gain melodic elements helps them to become deeper than their celestial pining would suggest. Pieces float up into the sky. With a usage of Post Rock’s quieter impulses Firetail’s efforts to merge the tender and gigantic are an overwhelming success. <br /><br />Opening in medias res is “Calculator”. The guitar’s work is immediate. Subtle textures of static weave in and out of the mix. Gradually the guitar descends allowing for the deep registers to give the sound a fullness that appear inescapable. Calm rules over the piece and tends to relax as the piece progress without interruption. Rather the gentle ease lets everything gain greater perspective. After all of this activity of the constant growing is the lone sound of the closer “Ajax”. With a much softer soft “Ajax” manages to conjure up images of fantastically empty spaces. Evolution of the sound allows the guitar to nestle between the lingering notes of its past. Firetail plays with an extreme delicacy that results in a smooth sound that comes in waves. Deliberate details twang out reminding the listener of the actual smaller size. <br /><br />For the last few moments of “Ajax” the guitar descends back to the Earth. Small strums remind the listener this is merely a single guitar coming out of the drone ready to recollect itself. Learning to Waltz is an incredibly moving performance.<div>

For connoisseurs of good sound, the artist does sell higher quality versions of this EP on Bandcamp. The free version on Silber Records are limited to mp3′s of 128 Kb quality.<br />The two tracks on this EP, one a bit less and one a bit more than 8 minutes long, are both of a fairly similar nature. Ambient, cinematic creations that invites to associations with the sea. End = Beginning builds and ends slowly, and contains a dark drone or resonance with smooth, gentle textured guitar and reverb constructions wash in lakes wave on the shore, with occasional surges soaring upwards. A pleasant and inviting construction, easy on the ears and mind both.<br />Concluding construction Floating Around sports a sampled undercurrent of waves washing on to the shore, with slow surges of guitar and reverb constructions slowly washing in and disrupting into a jittery drone like sound that slowly fades out, creating a soundscape of fairly constant surges and a jittery dronelike texture all present in a delicate, careful manner.<br />A pleasant and soothing creation that should attract the attention of fans of ambient music in general I guess, and one that arguably will have it’s key audience among fans of ambient post rock.<div>

Whatever the sound appears to go it remains incurably optimistic. The aural colors of these two songs are so bright it is simply amazing. Experimentation with format, taking a calmer route (for the first track) or a more aggressive approach (for the second track) makes for a unified whole. Both parts work together to complement the other. Put together the result is something to be wondered about in awe. <br /><br />‘End = Beginning’ takes the mellower approach out of the two tracks. The sound is Post-Rock without the crescendo. Lingering tones make themselves more powerful without the typical release that most ambient rock outfits aim for. Firetail is confident in their ability to display wonder without the need to increase the volume or intensity. On the finale of ‘Floating Around’ Firetail uses a different approach to achieve the same means. Here the Post-Rock leanings receive large dollops of distortion. Reminiscent of shoegaze the sound is particularly blurry. In spite of the initial lack of definition the melody comes together into a particularly satisfying whole.<br /><br />Ambient rock rarely sounds as it does on ‘Learning to Cheat’. Firetail creates a true gem of an EP with these two songs. By cutting out any trace of fat the result is sound that hits straight for the heart. This is an emotional release that feels every single tone to the fullest. ‘Learning to Cheat’ commands respect without saying a word.<div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Firetail is the one man project of Andrea Vascellari, who is being more known with regard to slowcore project Lullabier that has shared the stage with the likes of Rivulets, Low, Jessica Bailiff, and Boduf Songs. With Firetail he abandons a subdued, austere singer-songwriter concept, instead of it proceeding more extended sonic terrains and still life-induced progressions. Indeed, this 2-track issue is an outstanding one due to the organic bond of glacial-alike gloss, epic guitar overdrives and moody hiss washes and slow burning. The listener can feel himself/herself like standing alone on the shore at a remote distance of the civilization. Superb.</div>
