Particolare interessante come Vittorio Veneto sia un luogo speciale per la musica: gruppi ed etichette di quella città hanno sempre qualcosa da dire e sempre su temi che mi trovano interessato, non credo che sia un caso. Se aggiungo poi che per motivi extra musicali è un posto che frequento, che mi piace la glera e anche il montasio… dovrei chiedere la residenza! Scopro solo oggi Andrea Vascellari (parente di Nico? non importa, attivo anche come Lullabier) e il suo progetto ambient drone Firetail: l’uscita digitale è davvero concisa, con tre brani per nemmeno un quarto d’ora di sola chitarra acustica ed effetti ma vale la pena non lasciarla da parte, soprattutto se siete come me fan dell’ambient tranquilla e malinconica. Firetail goes for a subtle style with the subdued “Nylon”. By opting for such a delicate touch, the pieces resonate much more strongly. Over the course of the journey everything feels so soothing and so familiar. Every piece builds off the last, resulting in an unspoken narrative. After a three year wait, Italian artist/producer Firetail, aka Andrea Vascellari, has returned, with a new EP, Nylon. The three tracks are an original take on ambient music, having been performed entirely in one take and utilizing only a classical guitar. Eschewing the normal banks of synths, Vascellari creates a mesmerizing soundscape of varied sonic vibes. Lush and pleasing, he takes the classical guitar into otherworldly textures and soothing melodic structures, that at times suggest violin and cello. An altogether imaginative and welcome experience. Firetail is the endeavor of Andrea Vascellari, who recorded this 14-minute EP in one take earlier this month. Aptly titled, Nylon features just classical guitar, albeit heavily processed. The result is a set of three short drones. The source material for each can be discerned with careful listening – vibrating, rattling, and scraping of strings. But from there Vascellari uses delays to overlap tones into rolling waves of sound that ebb and flow. While minimalist in nature, Nylon encompasses both pastoral and mildly harsh moments. Vascellari is at his best when unleashes rapidly morphing walls of noise that demand the listener’s attention. With each gentle ring of the guitar Firetail’s “So Far” ascends to the heavens. Nothing on “So Far” moves quickly. Adhering to a slowcore/drone aesthetic the songs gain their impact through sheer power. The expertly arranged songs are canvases painting austere landscapes. Restrained to its very core by using a select amount of textures Firetail uses the minimal approach to maximal effect. For these are songs that are quietly emotional with their impact exploring elements of decay, with every gesture slowing dying away to reveal a deep autumnal beauty.  Somber in tone is the glacial pacing of “End=Beginning”. Reminiscent of Stars of the Lid’s early rock-orientated work the song shines with regal beauty. “Floating Around” hovers about with great physical power. Da Lullabier a Firetail lungo un percorso che vede Andrea Vascellari cambiare pelle e inaugurare una nuova casa discografica, la VeniVersus. La sua costante attività compositiva viene racchiusa in questa raccolta definitiva comprendente tutto il materiale stampato dal musicista trevigiano dall'inizio della carriera ed è una gioia per i sensi. Una sorta di eterea sinfonia avvolta lungo infiniti accordi di chitarra trattati con l'uso di un processore in grado di dilatare l'istante del piacere trasformandolo in sette movimenti di pura spazialità dronica. Essentially the one-man-band project of Italian musician Andrea Vascellari, Firetail clearly follows a “less is more” theory of composition. A fine showcase for Vascellari’s production abilities, the group’s music is very minimalistic in nature and generally fits in well with what I might expect from the ambient music genre. 2015 compilation So Far assembles everything that Vascellari has done under the Firetail moniker (he also performs under the name of Lullabier), much of which has a noticeable post-rock quality since it plays similarly to what one hears in the background of tracks from groups like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This album won’t appeal to mainstream tastes, but it’s very solid for what it is – a fact that probably shouldn’t have shocked me since it was Firetail who produced one of 2014’s better Christmas-themed Silber Records albums. Produzione ambient italiana e, come spesso succede con le release nel Belpaese, quel pizzico di personalità rende il lavoro desiderabile, anche se l’apparato sonoro non ha la carica negativa, l’impatto scenico, dell’ambient scandinavo e questo, in questo frangente, è frutto del background di Firetail, all’anagrafe Andrea Vascellari. Ora solo, il musicista proviene dalle narcosi strumentali dei Lullabier, band slow-core che proprio in Low, Codeine ed altri ha ispirato il downtempo necessario alle distensioni della propria musica, così Andrea porta in se, in Firetail, quel brumoso distendere d’arti che ha il potere di divenire marea in crescita, luna in crescita, sogno in divenire: tutto il sound di “So Far”, antologia di una carriera che vede il primo brano esposto e composto nel 2013 (la release fu “Silber”) e da quella release alla successiva “Trembl”, nasce la stesura, la raccolta delle sette tracce del file rilasciato da VeniVersus, speculo nel silenzio o nei testi non italici ...

Containing a single, sixteen minute track that reduces a well-known holiday favorite to a resonant blur, Firetail’s Little Droner Boy EP is easily the most accessible of the four Silber Records' 2014 Christmas releases that I’ve heard thus far. While the previous two albums in the series (Small Life Form’s Parts for Holiday Projects and Electric Bird Noise’s Birth) would be more or less unlistenable to those raised on more mainstream types of music, Firetail’s Droner Boy (the product of musician Andrea Vascellari, better known for work done under the Lullabier name) doesn’t just have a recognizable theme as its basis, but is -gasp!- actually fairly musical. Essentially what we have here is a manipulated version of the song “The Little Drummer Boy” that, instead of revolving around a rhythmic percussion parts, centers around an omnipresent, throbbing drone that’s heard throughout the piece in the background. Firetail creates an environment of ultimate wonder and deep reassurance. Drone has rarely sounded so soulful. Allowing the textures to gain melodic elements helps them to become deeper than their celestial pining would suggest. Pieces float up into the sky. With a usage of Post Rock’s quieter impulses Firetail’s efforts to merge the tender and gigantic are an overwhelming success. Opening in medias res is “Calculator”. The guitar’s work is immediate. Subtle textures of static weave in and out of the mix. Gradually the guitar descends allowing for the deep registers to give the sound a fullness that appear inescapable. Calm rules over the piece and tends to relax as the piece progress without interruption. Rather the gentle ease lets everything gain greater perspective. Per Andrea Vascellari, Firetail non è dunque un’estemporanea divagazione dalle riflessive trame di slow-core cantautorale di Lullabier: alle due tracce pubblicate lo scorso anno sotto il titolo “Learning To Cheat” seguono le altre due di circa dieci minuti di durata ciascuna di “Learning To Waltz”, pubblicate in formato digitale dalla canadese Trembl nella sua serie che unisce musica ambient e fotografia. Entrambi i brani sono infatti dotati di spiccati contenuti immaginifico-descrittivi, che li rendono perfetto complemento di immagini statiche o in lento movimento. Quelli di Firetail appaiono infatti lunghi piani sequenza prodotti da un’equilibrata interazione di aperture ambientali e iterazioni di frequenze modulate, che in “Calculator” si sviluppa come una spessa marea di riverberi concatenati, i cui contorni sottilmente distorti vengono smussati in maniera graduale come una scultura sonora che vede la luce attraverso successive sottrazioni di materiale o, meglio, di timbri.
